Norms Setting

Activity 2 – Norms & Rules Setting

Ask the participants for their suggestions on norms and rules setting and whether there should be the same rules from grade one to senior grade.

Write all the opinions on the board and finalize by adding the rules prepared by you.

Inform the participants that they should decide the norm-setting with the participation of the students. Where ever it is indispensable, help them to reach a finalized

Ask the participants to do this activity with their students. The students will not only respect the suggestions, recommended by them but also refrain from breaking the law that they have made. While doing this activity in the class, the teacher must give his input and add all the rules that are left on the list.

Teachers should complete this activity on the first day of the academic session. Finalize all the suggestions given by the students in the light of the suggestions issued by the school administration and post all the suggestions in bold words in a prominent place.

Consistently Reinforcing Norms

Regardless of the specific rules or procedures established for general classroom behavior, it's important to follow through consistently and reinforce these norms. You can do this in a variety of ways. Here are some specific suggestions:

  1. Model the procedures for students, or ask students to participate in modeling.
  2. Provide time for students to talk or write about why rules and procedures for general classroom behavior might be important and useful.
  3. Provide feedback to students about the extent to which they are following the rules and procedures so they can refine, improve, or correct their behavior.
